"So I'm driving down the parkway. I'm on my way to a job down the Jersey shore. I'm driving along, and I get this nagging feeling. I've been to this job before. I call my boss, tell him to check it. He says, I don't have time. Just go redo it. Ugh!"
In this case, I was going down there to do some right-of-way surveys. This is what you have to do for 5g cell towers. You know, the utility poles with single antennas bolted on to the top of them. One of these poles is usually installed every couple of blocks. The carriers can't put the poles on private property. So they need to know where the right-of-way is. Then they make sure that they stay in the right-of-way with their pole installation.
So what this means for me is, I have to recover all of the monuments in the areas of poles again. The monuments mark the edge of the right-of-way. Then I have to shoot the monuments again. I started thinking, how many guys, how many times, have done exactly the same thing as me. Recover the monuments (which of course are usually buried under a rose bush). Shoot them with the gps (if possible!!!) If not, set a couple of points. Hit them with the gps. Then get the gun out. Blah blah blah. So tedious!!
Another thing that happens all the time is, you get to a job, you start recovering monuments, and much to your surprise (not!), the little plastic caps on the top of the monument have your companies name on them. Your boss was too lazy to look up the new job before they sent you out there? Come on.
Or, you go out to a job, the caps have your buddies name on them. You call your buddy up. They say uh, yeah, sure, but I'm on vacation for the next two weeks. Just go redo it. Sigh.
Or, you go out to a job, you notice wow, this addition on the building is brand new. I'll just run over to the town hall. Take a look in the permit folder. Grab a copy of the site plan. So you go over to the town hall, say hey let me take a look in the permit folder. They say, fill out this form. Someone will get back to you. You say when. They say a week or two. When the person in charge of folders comes back from vacation. Groan.
That's how I got the idea to start Skate. Instant access to existing data. From any device. Anywhere. Anytime. No need to call the boss. No need to call your buddies. No need to beg and plead with government employees for (supposedly) public data.
